About MTR

Craftspeople, not a production shop

Red oak cabinetry with ebony finish — MTR work for Unique Real Estate Collective

Who We Are

MTR Custom Woodworking & Design is an Asheville-based woodworking and fabrication shop serving commercial and residential clients throughout Western North Carolina. We build custom cabinetry, millwork, bar countertops, and commercial build-outs — in hardwood, concrete, epoxy, and steel — for clients who need serious work done seriously well.

We are not a production shop. We don't build boxes from sheet goods and call it custom. Every project MTR takes on is designed, fabricated, and installed by skilled craftspeople who care about the outcome. That standard shows in the portfolio and in the list of clients who come back to us for their next project.

Built in Asheville, Built for Asheville

Asheville is a city that values craft. The restaurant scene, the brewery culture, the independent businesses that define the neighborhoods — they're built by people with high standards, and they need vendors who can meet those standards.

MTR has been part of that ecosystem. We've built bars and taprooms, restaurant millwork, retail counters, and residential spaces throughout the metro area. The Whale. French Broad Brewing. Upcountry Brewing. Buxton Hall. Galactic Pizza. The Hop. Banks Avenue Bar. Foothills Grange in Black Mountain. These aren't just client names — they're spaces where Asheville's community gathers, and MTR's work is part of what makes them feel right.

We know the Asheville market. We know what these spaces demand. And we know that a bar top or a built-in that fails in year two is a failure that reflects on everyone involved — which is why we don't cut corners on material selection, joinery, or finish.

What Sets MTR Custom Woodworking Apart from the Competition

MTR isn't a production millwork shop — we're a hands-on fabrication team that takes custom woodworking projects from concept and design drawings through finished installation. Our ability to work across hardwood, epoxy, concrete, and non-structural steel means we solve fabrication challenges that most shops can't handle, and our deep commercial experience means we understand the durability and timeline demands of high-volume hospitality environments in Asheville and across Western North Carolina.

We Handle the Whole Scope

MTR can take a commercial build-out from layout drawings through final installation. One point of contact, one set of accountability, no gaps between the design and what actually gets built.

We Work in Multiple Materials

Wood, concrete, epoxy, and steel — we fabricate across all of them, in-house. When a project calls for an epoxy pour over a walnut substrate with steel trim accents, we build it all.

We Understand Commercial Demands

MTR's commercial work is specified and finished for the conditions it's going to face — not just for the day it's installed. A bar top at a high-volume cocktail bar requires a different approach than a residential built-in.
